Dutch National Flag: A Symbol of History and Identity

Significant Features and Symbolism

The national flag of the Netherlands is a horizontal tricolour, composed of three bands of equal size in the colors red, white, and blue from top to bottom. The red represents valor, strength, and courage; the white signifies peace, purity, and innocence; and the blue symbolizes loyalty, justice, and perseverance.

Historical Origins

The origin of the Dutch flag can be traced back to the 16th century, when William I, Prince of Orange, became a leader of the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule. He adopted the colors red, white, and blue as his personal banner.
